English Language Supports at School- Ohio Department of Education and Workforce
All students enrolling in [District Name}, complete a Language Usage Survey (LUS). Students who indicate a language other than English on the LUS will be screened with the Ohio English Language Proficiency Screener (OELPS) to determine eligibility for English language services. Parents will be informed if students qualify for English language services with an explanation of the services. Students will be placed in age-appropriate grade level content classrooms and receive additional language support as needed based on language and academic needs. Students may receive allowable instruction and assessment modifications and accommodations to ensure access to content learning.

How long does a student receive English language services?
The amount of time a student receives English language services will vary for each individual student. Research shows it may take from 5-7 years to acquire academic language proficiency, but the amount of time will vary based on a student’s experiences. [District name] will monitor the progress of students’ language using classroom tools and the annual Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (OELPA). Students exit from the services when they reach proficiency on the OELPA.
